On Saturday, January 15, MCTC celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life in a way that truly honored his dream for humanity. Dr. King believed in the power of service to strengthen our communities and achieve common goals. Through his words and example, Dr. King challenged individuals to take action and lift up their neighbors and communities through service.

MCTC did exactly that. In partnership with more than a dozen local nonprofits, MCTC mobilized approximately 350 volunteers to perform service projects at these partner nonprofit agencies. The participating organizations were grateful for the help.

Abby Roza from the Minnesota Literacy Council Lake Street Learning Center said, “I just wanted to thank you so much for including us in the MCTC Day of Service. The 12 volunteers were so positive and such a joy to work with. They covered a large amount of area, and were wonderfully enthusiastic about the programming and the community. This outreach will make a big difference in the number of students we are able to serve. We look forward to partnering in the future.”

Senator Al Franken also came to support our volunteer effort at the Bridge for Youth in Minneapolis. You may have seen him sorting donations at the Bridge on one of our local news stations. Here’s a clip from Fox 9.

Before embarking on the day’s service projects, our v olunteers joined us for a breakfast program on MCTC’s campus. We were honored to have Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe as the keynote speaker. Dr. Bledsoe is the founder of the Student African American Brotherhood Organization (SAAB), which is a national organization with more than 250 chapters established across 40 states to enhance the experiences of and instill a “spirit of care” in African American males in high schools, colleges and universities around the country.

He delivered an inspiring speech, energizing the crowd even more for the work ahead. We are  thrilled to have Dr. Bledsoe help us to kick off a SAAB chapter on MCTC’s campus.

Thanks to everyone who signed up for the MLK Day of Service. The event was a great success because of everyone who participated. Special thanks to Target for sponsoring the event and to our media sponsor, WCCO.

Also, special thanks to the MLK Day of Service breakfast volunteers–these volunteers were made up of MCTC staff and faculty who agreed to come extra early that day to help to ensure the event ran smoothly and guests felt welcome. They did a fantastic job! MCTC looks forward to hosting this event and the community service projects again next year.
