August Wilson’s “Fences”

Fences by August WilsonMinneapolis Community and Technical College’s Theatre on the Park and Metropolitan State University’s Theater Underground will present a five-performance run of the Pulitzer Prize winning drama, Fences by August Wilson at the Whitney Fine Arts Center (1424 Yale Place, Minneapolis), February 9 – 12 at 7 p.m. There will be a matinee performance of the show on Saturday, February 12 at 1 p.m.

August Wilson (1945-2005) chronicled the African American experience in the 20th Century in a series of plays that stand as a landmark in the history of black culture, American literature and Broadway theatre.

Fences earned Wilson the New York Drama Critics and Tony Awards as well as the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Both James Earl Jones and Denzel Washington received Tony awards on Broadway playing the leading role, Troy Maxson, in Wilson’s play.

This production will be directed by Kevin West. Featuring Payton Woodson, Ghaffera Tillis, Byron Adams, LyBaqi Salahud-Din, Donald Walls and Antonio Banks. Scenic and Lighting Designer is by Kathy A. Stewart with costumes designed by Barbara Portinga.  The production will be stage managed by MCTC alumnus Justin Kirkeberg with Michael Robertson and Gail Smogard serving as co-producers for the show.

Admission is free! Audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the Emergency Foodshelf Network of Hennepin County.
